Minister HEM Vanndy Commends Honda for Boosting Cambodia's Economy with Local Production and Innovation

Phnom Penh, June 25, 2024: HEM Vanndy, Cambodia’s Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, & Innovation, visited the Honda Motorcycle Factory in Phnom Penh on June 24, 2024. The Minister praised the company for its significant role in fostering innovation, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities, and contributing positively to the Cambodian economy.

During his visit, Honda executives led the Minister through the factory's production lines, demonstrating the various stages involved in the manufacturing of motorcycles, from pressing and welding to electronic disposition painting and frame assembly.

The factory boasts the capacity to produce 1,500 units of the popular Honda Dream model per eight-hour shift. Since beginning its operations, Honda has produced more than 4.3 million motorcycles and has established a robust distribution network with 168 dealers across the nation.

Minister Vanndy lauded Honda for its 25 years of contributions to the local economy, emphasizing the vital role motorcycles play in the daily lives of Cambodians. He highlighted Honda's commitment to developing "Made-In-Cambodia" products, which have significantly advanced the country's manufacturing sector.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the ministry's management to engage directly with one of the key players in Cambodia’s mobility sector and discuss potential enhancements to industry regulations and policies.

Most components of the Honda Dreams are now manufactured locally, with certain parts even being exported to neighboring countries. This development not only improves the perception of Cambodian products internationally but also showcases the maturation of the local manufacturing industry.

Minister Vanndy encouraged Honda to continue facilitating visits from local SMEs to the factory, to learn from Honda's high standards and practices. He praised the company for its role in import substitution and reiterated the government's support for such initiatives.

He further recognized Honda’s efforts in environmental management, especially its wastewater treatment processes, and urged the company to keep pushing boundaries in innovation, including the potential use of robotic technology to augment the workforce.

Additionally, the Minister suggested that Honda explore collaborations with local designers for new motorcycle designs and consider financing options that would make Honda products more accessible to Cambodians, thereby enhancing nationwide mobility.

Honda, in partnership with NCX Co., Ltd., which is the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of Honda motorcycles in Cambodia, has created over 2,000 local jobs. This partnership has notably boosted employment in the region through its extensive manufacturing, assembly, and distribution operations.
